African
Sister City
(Shot by Peter Musurlian in California and Botswana)
In
this documentary, Peter Musurlian journeys to Southern Africa
to report on Burbank, California’s African Sister City
of Gaborone, Botswana. The city and country are peaceful
and prosperous, on a continent rife with war and hunger.
It’s a place
both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush visited during their presidencies.
The discovery of diamonds in the late 1960s is the primary
reason for the economic and political stability in this geographically
large, but sparsely populated country of 1.6 million.
Musurlian visits Gaborone City Hall, drives 100 miles outside
the capital to videotape a traditional wedding in a small village,
and tours Phakalane Country Club, which rivals some of the
most impressive golf courses anywhere in the world.
There is a pall that hangs over all of this, though: Nearly
40 percent of the adults in Botswana are HIV positive. Musurlian
examines why so many people are infected and reports on what
the government is doing to turn the tide.
